Introduction to Zoom – How to use Zoom for Beginners

This is a beginner course. It designed for learners with basic computer skills who have never used zoom and are not familiar with video conferencing platforms.

  • What you can expect to learn in the course
  • How to stay curious and confident when learning new technology
  • How to join a zoom meeting (from the internet, if you have downloaded the app or from your phone)
  • How to mute yourself and turn on / off your video
  • How to change your name, views and backgrounds
  • How to use the chat function
  • How to raise hand and use icons
  • How to test / trouble shoot volume / sound issues
  • How to use zoom’s interactive features
  • How to prevent common online learning mishaps

Designing Your Future: Planning and Advancing Your Goals

September 14th to October 9th
The program includes 3 zoom calls per week. This includes a weekly teaching call, led by an instructor, a small peer group call and an additional Q+A call. Participants will receive a workbook with lessons and exercises that will accompany the weekly teaching call and be supported by the small group call.

Schedule:

The course will be delivered Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30a.m. – 12:30p.m in group Zoom calls.

In the program you will:

  • Identify your work related and personal goals
  • Identify and describe your transferable skills, assets and experience
  • Build a positive self-image and mindset to pursue your goals
  • Build confidence and skills to support your future goals, including employment and career planning
  • Develop and implement a specific action plan to advance your goals
  • Take action towards your goals with the support of the group

Who should take this program:

This program is great for those who are seeking to get clarity and take action towards your goals with dedication, focus and the support of a group.

Requirements and expectations:

This is a dedicated course that will require 6+ hours of work per week (group and individual). Participation is weekly teaching calls and small groups are required.  The course is designed to provide participants with peer support and resources to move towards your goals. Participation in all 4 weeks of the course is an expectation. Please complete the attached registration questions. We will use your answers to help tailor the program to your interests and goals.

Customer Service Heroes: Building Your Customer Service Leadership Skills 

Commitment: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from September 8th – October 5th.

This 4-week course is for people who want to build on and advance their customer service skills and experience. The course will use real world problems and challenges to help to build and refine customer service skills. The course will be highly experiential and involve small group and independent work. The course will include the following topics:

  • Building the customer relationship
  • Learning from past customer service experienced to improve future service
  • Problem solving with customers: understanding the customer’s perspective, active listening and asking questioning
  • Fixing customer problems forever – how to determine what is a one off issue and what is an ongoing problem
  • Tackling ongoing customer service problems at work  – developing your solution and presenting them to management
  • Delivering over and above customer service – how to surprise and delight customers

Schedule:

The course will run for 4 weeks from September 8 – October 5th. Group Zoom calls will be held every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Who should take this program:

This course is designed for people with existing customer service experience, who seek to build on their skills and develop enhanced customer service and problem solving skills and practices.

Basic Computers

This is a two week program | Schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Total program hours: 20 hours

What you can expect to learn:

  • Learn how to use and troubleshoot issues with your tablet / device
  • Building confidence and comfort about using the internet and new computer programs
  • Learn how to navigate the internet
  • Learn how to use the key board and mouse
  • Learn how to use basic MS word processor / draft text online (e.g. using the formatting functions to write a letter)
  • Learn how to use google docs
  • Learn how to download applications
  • Learn how to use web based forms: e.g. applying for CERB, renewing a driver’s license, online banking
  • Learn how to search for information online
  • Learn how to create a LinkedIn profile
  • Learn how to look at and apply for jobs on indeed
  • Learn how to use email: write an email, respond to an email, forward, delete, shared and attached files

Participants that complete all 20 hours and course assignments are eligible to receive a free tablet or $200 honorarium.

What you can expect to learn:

  • Learn how to strengthen critical thinking skills to safely navigate online shopping.
  • Learn how to use YouTube to find videos on how to troubleshoot digital technology problems and other information such as how to do home repairs.
  • Learn how to use Facebook
  • Learn how to use email to strengthen communication skills, e.g. write formal and informal emails.
  • Learn how to download and organize applications and change app settings.
  • Learn how to customize and upload your resume to apply for jobs online.
  • Learn strategies to strengthen your confidence in finding information online.

Digital Tablet Basics

Total Program Hours: 18 Hours

Participants that complete all 18 hours and course assignments are *eligible to receive a free tablet or $200 honorarium.

This is an introductory course for digital tablet users with little or no experience using tablets. Participants will learn to connect to wifi, change tablet settings, download apps, take and edit photos, and more.

What you can expect to learn:

  • Basic Tablet Features and Navigation.
  • Learn about the home screen & finding, opening and using programs.
  • Change tablet settings and connect to wifi.
  • Manage notifications and updates.
  • Find information online using Google.
  • Use Google maps to find direction.
  • Learn to be safe and protect personal information online.
  • Find, download and use appss.
  • Use the camera to take photos and videos.
  • Edit and add filters to photos.
  • Use the photo gallery to store and organize photos.
  • Send and receive emails on a tablet.
  • Send email attachments (such as photos).

The Rules of the Road is a program that provides participants with 10 principles for sound investing and discusses how to identify and avoid the most common investment mistakes.

Part 3 – Government Benefits and how they fit with your Pension – September 10th

Understanding CPP, OAS and GIS can be confusing. Bring your questions. Also, if you can call the CPP hotline and find out your CPP and OAS qualification amount, that would be a great way to begin your education.

Stress Management & Wellness (Two Part Series)

Part 1 – Identifying and Settling Stress in the Body & Building Awareness

In this workshop you will learn how to recognize how your body holds stress, how to soothe and notice safety and settling in your system.

You will also learn how to build awareness of stress in your body, external environment as wellas stressful and internal dialogue and narrative. The session will include strategies and practices to increase awareness and lessen the impact of stress.

  • Definition of stress and trauma in terms of the Autonomic Nervous System (fight, flight, freeze, tend-and-befriend)

Part 2 – Managing Stressful Thoughts & Focusing on My Assets

In this workshop you will learn how to recognize and be aware of the thoughts we have that can cause us stress and anxiety. The session will include strategies and practices to increase awareness of these thoughts, create space between us and the thoughts and lessen the power of stressful thoughts on our well-being.

You will also learn how to recognize and identity your personal assets and strengths. The session will include practices to increase awareness of our assets and strengths and how we can use then to move towards our goals and increase our well-being.
